Manhattan's glamourous facelift continues, after UNStudio's Five Franklin Place and Shigeru Ban's Metal Shutter Houses, construction has just begun on renowned Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron's first US residential skyscraper at TriBeCa's 56 Leonard Street.
Herzog & de Meuron's work is always striking from the Beijing Nation Stadium – arguably the most enduring image of the 2008 Olympics. Jacques Herzog refers to the broader culture, art and even Andy Warhol for inspiration, "He used common Pop images to say something new. This is exactly what we are interested in: to use well-known forms and materials in a new way so that they become alive again."
56 Leonard Street will also be complete with a major work by London-based artist Anish Kapoor, which will be integrated into the architecture at street level. This will be Kapoor's first permanent public piece in New York City.
57 stories high, the building sitting on the corner of Leonard and Church will house 145 residences, each with it's own floorplan and private outdoor space. The architects describe it as "houses stacked in the sky." Each ranges from 1,430 square feet to 6,380 and prices range from $3.5 - $33 million. Occupancy anticipated late fall 2010.
