INTERVIEWS: CHUCK D & QUESTLOVE

Learn more about the history of BLAG and its co-Founders and Creators, British Twins Sally A. Edwards and Sarah J. Edwards. In the “Interview Battle” Chuck D interviews Sarah about her childhood, the importance of art school years, the perils of modelling and future plans for BLAG. Questlove talks with Sally about the beginnings of BLAG, the meaning behind the name, impact of his early BLAG cover and how no victory is sweet without a few bumps and bruises and a lot of determination.

The original story was first published in BLAG Vol. 3 Nø 4 print edition in 2013. Read the full story on BLAG.london

REBELS

Chuck D: Let’s go back, [laughs] you guys were to be models. That’s something where you totally have no control.

Sarah: Yes, that’s why that didn’t last long. [Laughs]
Chuck D: Who was the one that actually fought first? Did you guys simultaneously agree that you know, ‘I hate this thing and I’m actually going to rebel against it.’?

Sarah: I’ve got to give Sally credit for standing up for us on photo shoots.

Chuck D: So, one day, she just said, ‘Yo, this is some bullshit?’

Sarah: She would do it on a shoot. We both had this horrible shoot for something that ended up in Vogue in Germany. We both said, ‘No. You cannot do this. You mustn’t treat twins that way.’ There are some things we’ve managed to change and be dressed the right way that we think is appropriate to us, but we didn’t want to do it because we were getting misinterpreted. I think is the main way to put it.

Chuck D: Let’s go back, [laughs] you guys were to be models. That’s something where you totally have no control.

Sarah: Yes, that’s why that didn’t last long. [Laughs]

Chuck D: Wow.

Sarah: Yeah.
Chuck D: How about as far as BLAG owners and co-Founders and somebody just approaching you guys, ‘Hey Sarah, hey Sally would you guys like to have a double date? Has that happened to you guys yet?

Sarah [Laughing]: No. [laughs] Thankfully not. Chuck! What kind of question is that?

Chuck D: A BLAG double date? [Laughing]
Sarah [Laughing]: I can’t believe you’re asking me a red top question!
Chuck D: Hey.
Sarah: Busted.
Chuck D: I prepared myself.
Sarah: [Laughs] Yeah. You knew the answer to that.

Chuck D: That’s what cheesy magazines do. I know you’ve been surrounded by cheesy people, what’s a good repellant for you guys against cheesy people trying to sway you into the social swag of things?
Sarah: I always say that I’m not cool. But I suppose I might be seen as cool in the other sense because I will just repel. I’ll just say no straight away. [Rubs arm] I can feel it.
Chuck D: That’s cool to a lot of people by saying you’re not cool.
Sarah: Yeah. Yeah.
Chuck D: So, what’s the repellant?

Sarah: Instinct. I think for being... I don’t know, a spectator of culture – is probably the best way to put it, for so many years. I can just see what will happen if you agree to these things. I would like to make money, but I would rather not make so much money that I’m not in control of my life.

KEEP IT EVEN

Questlove: So before you started, you had absolutely no experience in the publishing world whatsoever.

Sally: No. We got all our content together and we didn’t even know how we were going to produce it. I cornered a couple of my tutors at Art College and said, “Can you photocopy this for me, please? I’ll give you 20 quid.” [laughs] Which was from my saving from my diner job! [Laughs]

Questlove [smiles]: Oh! So you didn’t come from a lineage of you know... Most people I know they start a venture this young, usually they have a monetary lineage of a rich uncle or a rich father...

Sally: No, not at all. Not at all.

Questlove: So before you started, you had absolutely no experience in the publishing world whatsoever.

Sally: No. We got all our content together and we didn’t even know how we were going to produce it.

Questlove: So you came from like a working class background?

Sally: Yes, I started working when I was 14 or 15 to be able to pay for what I wanted as a kid, like clothes or make-up or magazines. Mainly paying for Art College materials. I worked at a diner all the way through art college. I was kind of fortunate enough to be able to get a grant – they existed back in the time, when we moved to London to start going to College, but it didn’t stick with me, I only lasted three months and then I ended up getting a job in the music industry. So it’s just been self-funded rather than trust funded all the way along.
