Twice a year, Design Miami/ brings together cutting-edge creativity at their unique fair. On 12th June, the Miami born fair upsticks to Basel for six days to inspire design’s passionate crowd and lands again in each December at home back in Florida.

Esteemed gallerists, designers, curators, critics and collectors from around the world will soon gather in Basel to celebrate design, culture and commerce through a series of exhibitions, presentations, talks and awards.

The Basel fair welcomes 47 prestigious galleries from thirteen countries to present exhibitions of collectible design for acquisition. Expect rare and unique furniture, lighting and objects d’art. Highlights include Side Gallery Of Barcelona who are presenting their rich collection of modernist furniture by Brazilians architect Oscar Niemeyer.

“At a time when the pace of our lives seems to be ever increasing, from the news cycle to social media updates, it feels like an opportune moment to take a step back, to appreciate the qualities inherent in good design––to notice how function, beauty, and materiality affect the ways in which we engage with each other and with the world at large,” says Rodman Primack, Chief Creative Officer, Design Miami/.

You’ll also find this year’s ‘Satellites’ show; a selection of Stuart Parr’s classic 1970s motorcycle collection, a bookstore, Unlimited: Art Basel’s sector for artworks and the Design At Large Program.

The program will present works from internationally acclaimed artists; Zhang Zhoujie, Masatoshi Izumi and Koichi Hara, Jean Prouvé, Gaetano Pesce, RDAI Architecture, DISCOGUFRAM, Lina Bo Bardi Giancarlo Palanti Studio d’Arte Palma and Atelier Luma.

Focusing, ‘on how the Past has influenced the Now and How the Now May Influence Tomorrow,’ is organised by celebrated photographer François Halard, au fait with creating striking imagery—subjects include artist personalities Louise Bourgeois and Cy Twombly to iconic architectural landmarks; Villa Noalilles in Hyères and La Maison de Verre in Paris, France. “Ideas are the bedrock of art and design—will and craft makes them physical, and time is the mediator,” explains François Halard. “In some of these projects, we can see concepts that have defined the last fifty years of art and design as well as in other ways we may see the seeds of the cities of tomorrow, and yet only time will tell.”

‘Design at Large is centred on the theme of twentieth and twenty-first century architectural expression. It presents large-scale works of historical and contemporary design, showcasing ambitious architectural installations which surpass the scope of the traditional gallery booth. Each edition is curated by a global tastemaker and features both conceptual and industrial innovation.’

The presentation considers how ‘historical design continues to inform contemporary practises today and today’s practitioners will go on to influence the future of design. Unified by François Halard’s concept, which focuses on the lasting impact of good design on our lives and on the world around us.

The full program line up features:
