Ever the oracular author, J. Cole has created a time capsule of the things that bother and provoke us the most
This spring, J. Cole released his instantly critically acclaimed fifth album, KOD. Or officially Kids On Drugs, King Overdosed and Kill Our Demons.’
Sometimes it’s quite interesting to switch our approach to listening to new music. Ahead of pressing play, you might like to think; what does this artist want to achieve? What does he/she feel their purpose is? Having a major platform to broadcast from, what do they feel responsible for? And what is it doing for me?
Ever the oracular author, J. Cole vividly chronicles ‘a new world highlighting addictions of all sorts,’ throughout KOD. Solicitously, delivering painted stories via cadence flips and twice backed-up by kiLL edward (his rumoured alter-ego, look out for his album soon too), each track utilises words and beats powerful enough to help you connect with subjects that your conscious may likely have been tugging on you about.
When you dig a little deeper and pay closer attention to that hook, beat or lyrical emphasis of delivery, you can find yourself rewarded in ways you may not have anticipated and perhaps the artists didn’t realise either.
KOD is a time capsule of the things that bother and provoke us the most in the 2010s. J. Cole took the weight of so many issues of his shoulders, that the narrative throughout is a testament to his artistry, passion and awareness. His ‘choose wisely’ messages placed throughout the album, only strengthen each track’s content and just as he describes, are additional “empowering” and “cautionary” tales. Backing up the reality shed and impact KOD is bound to make.
