Born in New York and Discovered in Kent: Meet Wolf Tone Protégé, Elle Watson

When we first listened to ‘Pressure’ by Elle Watson, from her new EP, ‘Clinchers’, we heard that specific sound which only London seems to make. It’s quietly confident, holds its ground with its own pace, its slickly creative and relentlessly on its own unique path. To that end we decided to discover the soon to be growing story of Elle Watson.
The videos for both 'Pressure' and 'Bruised' from the EP tie-in with each other to continue the story. Representing "the phrase 'be careful when you wish for'. It's important not to underestimate your growth. You can seek refuge in your imagination and pray it becomes true," explains Elle of the video for 'Pressure'. Yet for 'Bruised': "Sometimes once it turns into reality you want nothing more than to escape," she says.
Just in her 20s, Elle sings with the soul and cadence of someone well beyond her years. Multi-grammy award winning producer, musicians and songwriter, Paul Epworth who is famed for his work with Adele, James Bay, Jay Electronica, Lana Del Ray and so many more naturally recognised this the moment he first heard Elle’s music. So much so, the producer-extraordinaire fast signed her up to his Wolf Tone label and became her mentor.
Elle was born in New York to an English Mother and Australian Father who fell in love in Manhattan. Together the family moved around frequently between the east coast, west coast and Texas before landing in Kent, England. The EP was ‘honed through Elle’s adolescence; a time of learning to fit in and feel at ease in spite of school bullies, academic pressure and the loneliness that comes from veering off-the-beaten-path.’ Elle always had music via her parents’ CD collection to escape to and you can hear the influence of Prince, Bjork and The Cure within her work. As luck would have it, Elle met studio engineer and also Wolf Tone assistant, Joseph Hartwell Jones who she’d go on to work with on weekend sessions whilst studying. At 15-year-old Elle impressively covered Jimi Hendrix—no wonder her current dream team have been drawn to her.
Impressively, Paul Epworth and Elle, Dave Bayley from Glass Animals and Clams Casino (A$AP Rocky and Vince Staples) round out the squad for production credits on the ‘Clinchers’ EP.
